Biography Takahashi Shotei (1871 - 1945)

Born in 1871 in Tokyo, he was adopted into the Takahashi family and in 1880, was apprenticed to his uncle Matsumoto Fuko's workshop. In 1887, he joined the Imperial Household Department of Foreign Affairs, where it was his job to copy designs of foreign medals, clothing, and other ceremonial objects. In 1889, along with Terazaki Kogyo, he founded the Japan Youth Painting Society (Nihon Seinen Kaiga Kyokai) and worked as illustrator for several magazines.
In 1907, he was recruited by Watanabe Shozaburo and designed many woodblock prints, of which many have been lost during the Great Kanto earthquake of 1923.
Still working for Watanabe, he also produced larger prints for Fusui Gabo and Shobido Tanaka in 1930's.
He died of pneumonia in 1945.
