Biography Mishima Shōsō (1856 - 1926)

Mishima Shōsō was born in Edo (Tokyo), and was trained as a Maruyama-Shijō-school painter: he first studied with a disciple of Suzuki Nanrei, then became a disciple of Kikuchi Yōsai. He became a close friend of Watanabe Seitei, who was also a student of Kikuchi Yōsai.
He was active from the start of the kuchi-e movement and he contributed numerous illustrations for books and magazines, and he also made single-sheet prints.
